BEEP Zine

Project Type

Multimedia Audio Zine

Date

May 2025

BEEP is a multimedia zine that audibly maps Toronto’s urban soundscapes, where humans and more-than-humans meet. We use field recording and collage to assemble acoustic communities and make these assemblages heard. We’re shopping at the Dufferin Mall, waiting for the TTC, catching up at Lee’s Palace, ordering at your local coffee shop, haunting our favourite bar, lurking in pool halls, strolling streetside, swimming on the Island, and picnicking at Trinity Bellwoods. We’re an ecology of species, technologies, materialities, and nature. What is our sonic future?

Check out our four editions: bus, bar, pool and park. Each zine contains three soundscapes and three collages: swimming pools and pool tables, TTC buses and subways, local bars and music bars, protests and ProTools, parking lots and neighbourhood parks.

Listen to the soundscapes on their own as you flip through each edition. Or, click to view the manifestos folded inside each zine and listen to the soundscapes layered together.

BEEP is funded by the School of Cities Small Grants Program at the University of Toronto and is co-created by Aline Zara and Lauren Knight.
